Image audience:

The image I am using shows the average monthly temperatures for Little Rock, Arkansas. I would use this with my 7th grade class during our unit discussion over weather.

Usability partner statement:

Hi Keith,

I think that your image is very clear and easily understood in a minimal amount of time. I think you shoud probably give a name for the axis title. I think the three titles you have are in bold which draws the eye to them first, giving them priority in the hierarchy, which is good. The chart also has good proximity. You also followed the rule of comparing values side-by-side instead of up-and-down. I also thought the size of the bars that you chose was appropriate and "told the truth" about the information you are trying to convey.

I do not really have many suggestions for you, as I think this is a successful image. Nice work!

Justification statement:

I believe this image is a good example of hierarchy (Pg. 120-121). You are immediately drawn to the temperature chart and can quickly see the monthly rise and fall of the temperature. The chart in the image is also the main attention grabber or Cue (Pg. 120)

Unit 4 visual activity final

First Draft:
I would use this image with my 7th and 8th grade students when we are discussing Rivers and their affects on erosion, agriculture and human lives. The areas highlighted in blue is the present day course of the Mississippi River just north of Memphis, TN and close to the Reelfoot Lake area of TN. The areas highlighted in dark green are the oxbows or bends in the river that were cut off due to floods and causing the river to change its coarse. Please offer suggestions on ways to improve the image. I wonder if the green I used is to close in color to the surrounding landscape and maybe a different color would be better.

Hi Keith,

I really like this image and don’t think it needs a whole lot of work! It is very clear and takes very little time for the viewer to understand. I really like the blue and green colors you used as well, as they blend well with the landscape and are not distracting, but are still distinct parts of the image. The only thing I wonder about is type. I understood your image very well after I had read the description, so if you provided that description along with the image I do not see any problems. I wonder, however, if you could somehow label some of the key ideas with key words? Or perhaps make a key for the image that indicates what the colors mean? If you were to use the image along with a verbal or written explanation then I don’t think the type is necessary, but I was just wondering.

I also really liked how your colors were saturated to make the instructional information advance (p. 264). I wouldn’t say that this image needs much work! Good job Keith!

Final image:

To improve the image I would add an explanation of the colors that are highlighted in the old image, which would lead to a better understanding of the picture.

The color Blue is where the present day Mississippi River.

The color Green is the oxbows or where river curved in previous years and was cut off due to floods in the past.

Hi Keith,

I really love this image. The objects that you chose represent their concepts very well. I think that the image is perfect for your target audience is well. You did a great job with the proximity of the words and the images. I wonder if maybe you could change it so that all of the fonts are the same, but I’m not sure what that would do for the contrast in the image. It might be something you could play around with though if you haven’t already. I also think you might be able to get rid of the ellipsis after the words “States of Matter” just to give the eye one less think to focus on, because I think your title has good proximity to the rest of the image.

As far as the ESL students go, I actually think this image would appeal to them, because you chose very nice images to represent your concepts. I think that if you were to take out all of the words except the title, we could still infer what the 3 states of matter were just from the images, so I think you did a nice job making this accessible to all students.

The contrast needed changing. All of the fonts were changed to the same size, color, and style. I made the title a little larger so it could be easily seen as the title and not part of the states of matter. I also changed the Proximity of the word liquid so it is closer to the image and is more easily attached mentally to the image. I believe this series of 3 images with 3 words is a good example of Instructional Typography since it uses only 3 words and 3 pictures to explain an idea that will be used in a 7th grade science classroom with an ESL student.

Visual activity unit 3 draft

This would be a science unit over the 3 main states of matter. I would use this image with my 7th grade science ESL students. Please help me make this image as user friendly to an ESL student. Some of my ESL students speak a little English but last year I had one who couldn't speak any English at all, so I'm afraid this might be hard to understand for them.

Project Description:
I would use this with my 7th grade science class. I hope this image isn't to busy. My main focus is for the student to understand that water goes through a cycle of precipitation, evaporation, and condensation. Hopefully the graphic shows that idea and the text to the right should explain the 3 parts of the cycle. Let me know what I need to do to improve this image.

Usability Comments:
Usability partner did not make a reply so I made my own corrections. I felt that the words Condensation, Precipitation, and Evaporation needed the color changed to white to match with the picture colors and make it more readable. The text to the right was white and therefore made it hard to read with the background.

Justification statement
The image isn't overly complex so it doesn't have a high Intrinsic load. The image isn't so busy that it causes the viewer to much of a visual load on the memory, or Extraneous load. (Chap. 3 pg. 52) Hopefully the image of the circle showing the water cycle will serve as a shape of Instructional function. (Chap. 10 pg. 250)
